I’m no scientist, but I have definitely seen the correlation between home organization and stress levels. While there’s so much we can’t control that life throws at us, we CAN control our home environment. Here’s 3 ideas to get you started.
There is a period in our lives when we’re striving to accumulate, as we build a home and family. There also comes a time when it makes sense to edit. Looking around you and seeing what adds value and what doesn’t will help you reduce clutter, and stress. Make it your focus to think about accumulating less, and editing more.
“Memory clutter” often accounts for a lot of the extra items we have. These are the things accumulated in our homes that represent special times or people in our lives. These items can be hard to let go of! I try to have clients think about one thing that best represents a place or a person, and let go of the others. Find those singular treasures and make peace with letting go of the rest.
It’s amazing how much paper makes its way into our homes each day, and it’s often a source of clutter on flat surfaces. Make it a habit to deal with it straight away. Get rid of the junk immediately. Then implement a two bin system. One for bills that have to be paid soon, and another for lower priority paperwork that needs to be retained. Work through your bills bin weekly, and the paperwork bin once a month – then discard what’s no longer needed.
If your home clutter is causing you to feel stressed, then the best thing you can do is not put it off any longer. If you’re having trouble getting started, consider contacting Consider It Done!
