It’s much easier to do the more physical decluttering (think garage, attic) while the temperatures are cooler. In fact it can feel pretty good to get moving after the cold winter months indoors. (Also, I find a garage before & after picture soooo satisfying!)
According to the National Soap and Detergent Association (https://www.cleaninginstitute.org/) (USA), getting rid of clutter would eliminate 40% of housework in the average home. I’m all for less housework!
A thorough Spring Clean removes the winter build up of dust and allergens in the home – a deep clean, open windows and fresh air in the home not only feels good, but it’s good for you too.
The average self storage street rate for a 10×10 storage unit is $128/month, up 7.6% year-over-year. There are many reasons we resort to storage in the first place, but it can be eye-opening to think about what you could save yearly by eliminating items you don’t use at all.
Multiple studies have shown that clutter in the home can increase stress and anxiety – sometimes you can feel that physical reaction when you walk into a cluttered space. Add to that the stress that comes from not being able to find the things you need easily, you can see how clutter can have a negative impact on your life.
I should add, stress, anxiety and depression can be the cause of clutter at home. If that’s the case, then consider reaching out for help. Of course we can help with getting the clutter back under control, but also consider talking to your doctor or another health professional about how you’re feeling.
I hope you found some inspiration here – if you manage to do some decluttering this month, I’d love to hear about it, and perhaps see some of your before and after pictures!
